My Company Values Me? Does It?

Millions have decided not to return to work, transition to a new industry, or pursue their passion. Why should they return to work when, they have found joy and balance? “The Great Resignation”, has impacted the entire world for the Good and the Bad.

Many factors may be driving this phenomenon including a desire to work from home and the associated schedule flexibility many got a taste of during the pandemic. At the same time, many people are acutely aware that they have choices and now feel empowered to seek more meaning and purpose, social connection, and a feeling of being valued and appreciated by their employer, in particular their manager.

This need to feel valued by their manager seems to be largely overlooked by many employers. In a September 2021 study on what drives retention, McKinsey & Company reported that survey respondents rated “feeling valued by my manager as #2” second only in importance to the #1 response which was “feeling valued by my organization.”

This is not new information as Gallup has long found that the quality of managers and team leaders is the single biggest factor in an organization’s long-term success. Their research is so compelling that they published an entire book on their results called, “It’s the Manager” by Jim Clifton and Jim Harter, in 2019 based upon their largest global study on the Future of Work. Note that this indicator of employee satisfaction and retention was valid even before the pandemic – COVID-19 has further strengthened its importance.
